ASA collaborates with ACI on a global template agreement

What the ACI agreement means for the ground handling industry

Recently, Airports Council International drafted a template which would interfere with the way ground handlers conduct their business at airports around the world. ASA is now in discussion with ACI on what this global template agreement means for the ground handling industry.

What is in the agreement?
This document is used by airports around the globe as a framework from which to build agreements with ground service providers. Unfortunately, ACI did not consult our industry when drafting the document in 2018. However, after receiving our comments, ACI expressed the opportunity to amend the document before it enters force.

It may come as a surprise that many airports do not have a formal agreement with their ground service providers. Therefore our involvement is vital to ensure a balanced, fair template agreement meant to formalise working relationships.

As it currently stands, the template agreement demands far too many obligations on the side of the ground service provider. These obligations should be agreed upon between GSPs and their customers instead of imposed on GSPs by airports.

We aim to change this. Through the detailed recommendations we have given ACI, we hope to further involve the ground handling industry in the drafting and approval of such documents.

ASA will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our industry is taken seriously and treated as an equal. I look forward to the work to come.

Yours Sincerely,
Fabio Gamba
